Active Status shows a green dot and “Active now” to people you follow or message. You can turn it off any time.
Turn off Active Status
- Go to your profile and tap the menu.
- Tap Messages and story replies (or Privacy, depending on version).
- Tap Show activity status.
- Turn it off.
What changes
- Others will not see when you are online or were recently active.
- You also will not see other people’s activity status.
Does it hide that you read messages?
No. Read receipts are separate. Some versions let you turn off read receipts in the chat settings.

- To use Instagram without pressure to reply
- For privacy from certain contacts
- To focus on work while still checking DMs
