If you have a business or creator account, Story Insights show a metric called Navigation. It tells you how people moved through your stories.
The four parts of Navigation
- Forward taps: viewers tapped to skip to your next story frame.
- Back taps: viewers tapped back to see a frame again.
- Next story: viewers swiped to the next account’s stories.
- Exited: viewers left stories completely.
The total Navigation number is the sum of these actions.
What is good and what is bad?
- Back taps are good. People wanted to see something again.
- Some forward taps are normal, but a lot of them mean the frame was not interesting.
- Next story and exits show where people lost interest.
How to check it
Open a story, swipe up to see the viewers and stats, then tap the Insights (bar chart) icon. You can also see story data in Professional Dashboard → Insights.
How to improve navigation
- Put the most interesting frame first.
- Use text people need time to read, so they pause.
- Add polls, quizzes and sliders. See poll ideas.
- Post 3–7 frames, not 20.
- Use cliffhangers: “Wait for the last slide.”
Use it together with reach
A story with high reach but many exits needs a stronger opening. Learn more in Instagram Story Views and Instagram metrics.
