Check in the app
- Go to Edit profile → Username.
- Type the name you want.
- A tick means it is available; an error means it is taken or not allowed.
Do not save unless you want to change your username now.
Check in a browser
Visit instagram.com/username. If the page says “Sorry, this page isn’t available,” the name may be free, deactivated or restricted.
Why a name may be unavailable
- Someone else is using it.
- It belongs to a deactivated account.
- It was recently used and is on hold.
- It contains blocked words or symbols.
If it is taken
Use a small variation: add “the”, “hq”, “official”, your city or what you do. See username ideas.
Protect your brand
- Register the same handle on all platforms early.
- Consider trademark registration.
- Report impersonation accounts.
