Does Instagram delete inactive accounts?
Instagram generally does not delete accounts just for inactivity. Its terms allow it to remove accounts that are inactive, but it rarely does so. Usernames of inactive accounts are not usually released to others.
The real risk: losing access
Old accounts are often lost because:
- The email or phone number is no longer yours
- You forgot the password
- Two-factor codes go to an old number
Keep your account safe
- Update your email and phone in Accounts Center → Personal details.
- Turn on two-factor authentication with an app, not just SMS.
- Save backup codes.
- Log in at least once every few months.
Recovering an old account
Use Forgot password and choose email or phone. If neither works, use the “Need more help” option and follow verification steps.
