Every growing account eventually gets negative comments. How you respond affects your reputation more than the comment itself.
First, sort the comment
- Genuine complaint: a customer had a bad experience. This is an opportunity.
- Honest criticism: someone disagrees respectfully. Engage politely.
- Troll or abuse: the goal is to provoke you. Do not feed it.
- Spam: fake links, scams or bots. Delete and block.
How to reply to genuine complaints
- Reply quickly and publicly so others can see you care.
- Thank them and apologise for the experience, without arguing.
- Move details to DMs: “Please DM us your order number so we can fix this today.”
- Follow up in public once solved, if they are happy.
Example: “Sorry about this, Priya. That is not the experience we want for you. We have sent you a DM to sort it out right away.”
How to handle trolls
- Do not argue. A calm reply or silence works better.
- Use Restrict so their comments are visible only to them. Learn more in our Restrict vs Block guide.
- Hide comments with offensive words under Settings → Privacy → Hidden Words.
- Block and report abusive accounts.
Tools Instagram gives you
- Hidden Words: filter offensive words, phrases and emojis.
- Limits: temporarily limit comments and DMs from recent followers or non-followers during a pile-on.
- Comment controls: choose who can comment.
- Pin comments: pin positive ones to set the tone.
