Engagement rate tells you how many of your followers actually interact with your posts. Brands look at it before paying creators, and Instagram uses engagement to decide how many people see your content.
How to calculate it
Engagement rate = (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100. Use your last 10–12 posts for the averages. Or let our free Engagement Rate Calculator do it, including a comparison with a competitor.
What is a good engagement rate?
- Under 10K followers: 4% or more is strong.
- 10K–100K followers: 2–3% is good.
- Over 100K followers: 1–2% is normal.
Smaller accounts usually have higher rates because their audience is closer to them.
Why your engagement might be low
- Inactive or fake followers
- Posting at the wrong times
- Captions that don’t invite a reply
- Content that doesn’t match what your followers followed you for
How to improve it
Ask a simple question at the end of captions, reply to comments quickly, use carousels (they get more saves), and grow with followers who are genuinely interested in your niche.
