Spam ruins the experience for everyone, so Instagram is strict about it. Here is what counts as spam and how to stay on the right side.
What Instagram treats as spam
- Posting the same comment or message many times
- Following and unfollowing large numbers of accounts quickly
- Tagging lots of unrelated people in posts
- Sending unsolicited promotional DMs in bulk
- Using irrelevant or banned hashtags
- Links to scams or misleading websites
Common spam you will see
- “Promote it on @xyz” comments
- Fake brand ambassador offers
- Crypto or investment “opportunities”
- Phishing links asking you to log in
Never click suspicious links or share OTPs. See fake Instagram DMs.
How to report spam
Tap and hold the comment or message, or tap the three dots on a profile, and choose Report → It’s spam.
How not to look like a spammer
- Write unique comments that respond to the post.
- Space out your actions and avoid bulk following.
- Use 5–15 relevant hashtags, not 30 random ones.
- Do not DM strangers with sales pitches.
- Avoid growth bots. Read Instagram automated behaviour.
If you get an action block
Stop the activity for 24–48 hours, remove any third-party apps and check Account Status.
