Stories are the quickest way to stay in touch with your followers. Here is how views are counted and how to get more of them.
How a story view is counted
A view is counted when someone opens your story, even for a moment. Replays by the same person count once in the viewer list. You can see who viewed each story for 48 hours after posting; after that, only the total remains in Insights for business and creator accounts.
Why some people appear first in your viewer list
For stories with many viewers, Instagram orders the list using signals like how often you interact with those accounts. It is not a list of “stalkers”. People who viewed but do not follow you appear too if your account is public.
Why your story views dropped
- You posted too many stories at once and people tapped through.
- Your followers include inactive or bot accounts.
- You stopped posting stories regularly.
- Your stories are not interactive.
10 ways to get more story views
- Post 3–7 stories a day instead of 20 at once.
- Use polls, quizzes and question stickers. See our poll ideas.
- Start with a hook: “Wait for the third slide”.
- Share new posts to stories with a teaser.
- Add location and hashtag stickers for extra discovery.
- Reply to every story reaction.
- Use Close Friends for exclusive content.
- Save the best stories to Highlights.
- Post when followers are online with the Best Time tool.
- Grow a real audience that cares about your content.
Measure what matters
In Insights, check reach, forward taps, back taps, exits and replies. Lots of exits on the first frame means your opening is weak.
